Excerpt from The Mirror of Causality 06
什么叫善业呢？善业就是减少恶业、对治恶业、断除恶业。造善业并不是去增加什么东西，而是要去减少恶。
Positive action is reducing negative actions, countering negative actions, and cutting off negative actions. Engaging in positive actions is not about adding something new; it is about reducing negativity.
以杀生为例，你把过去的杀业都忏干净了，一点杀心都没有了，那你肯定会长寿，并且也不容易得病。
Taking killing as an example, if you cleanse all your past negative karma related to killing and have no trace of killing intent, then you will undoubtedly live a long life and be less susceptible to illnesses.
我们受了不杀戒，现在不会杀生，但是不等于我们永远都不杀生。别人冒犯你到一定的程度，你可能就会杀，或者你转世过来忘记了，也可能会杀。
We have taken the precept of non-killing, and currently we do not kill. However, it doesn't mean we will never kill in the future. If someone offends us to a certain extent, we might resort to killing, or if we are reborn and forget about our precepts, we may also engage in killing.
我们的杀业没有消干净之前，转世之后还是会去杀生的。一个没有杀业的人，任何时候都不会去杀生、都不会造杀业。
Before our killing karma is completely eradicated, we may still engage in killing even after being reborn. A person without the karmic imprints of killing will never engage in killing at any time and will not create killing karma.
那么为了对治自己的杀业，我们就去行善——不仅不杀生，还去救生。其他众生将要被杀的时候被你救了，他对你会有个感恩的心，以后你被杀的时候就会有因缘得救。
Therefore, to counteract our own killing karma, we engage in positive actions – not only refraining from killing but also saving lives. When other beings are about to be killed and you save them, they will feel grateful towards you. As a result, in the future, when you are in danger of being killed, there will be favorable conditions for you to be saved.
我们所谓的善报不就是这些吗？当我们被人杀的时候，突然就有人救你了，或者我们干脆就不会碰到被杀的情况。大地震来了，战争来了，人家都死了，你就没事，死的事情轮不到你头上，炸弹掉你边上都不会爆炸。这就是因为我们不杀生、保护生命而得到的善报。
Isn't this what we call karmic rewards? When we are about to be killed, suddenly someone comes to save us, or perhaps we never encounter situations where we could be killed. When a major earthquake or war occurs, while others perish, we remain unscathed. Death does not fall upon us; we escape even when bombs fall nearby. This is because we have refrained from killing, protected lives, and received karmic rewards as a result.
这样的善报也没有什么，不就是不死嘛？这一期生命不会遭受这种横死的果报，所谓的善报也就是这样，就是苦苦少一点。
This kind of karmic reward is nothing extraordinary; it's merely avoiding death, isn't it? In this current life, we won't suffer the karmic consequences of a violent death. The so-called karmic rewards are just experiencing slightly less suffering.
所以大家要记住，我们修善业不要增长贪心，修善行没有什么东西可得，善业多的人就是苦难少一些，仅此而已。三界六道的众生，哪里都是苦的，只是苦少苦多的问题。
Therefore, everyone should remember that when cultivating positive actions, we should not grow our greed. There is nothing to gain from practicing positive actions; it simply means that those with more positive karma will experience slightly less suffering. That's all. All beings in the Three Realms and Six Paths all experience suffering; it's just a matter of varying degrees of suffering.
我们以这样的心态来行善，就没有什么可骄傲的，这有什么好骄傲的呢？骄傲就增长贪名心和傲慢心，这样的话是会带来痛苦的。
If we engage in positive actions with such an attitude, there is nothing to be proud of. What is there to be proud of? Pride only increases the greed for fame and arrogance, which will result in suffering.
