Freedom and Pervasive Suffering

Volume 2: Truth That Touches Your Heart

We are born as humans, and we all desire to live freely, so we instinctively pursue freedom. However, we have a significant misconception. What is this misconception? It is that when we have desires and the means to satisfy them, such as wealth, power, or time, we may mistakenly believe that this is freedom.

For instance, if you want to buy a car, and you have the money to do so, you may feel that this is freedom. Similarly, if you have a passion for racing and decide to buy a sports car to participate in races, you might consider this as freedom. Or, if you want to travel to a certain place, and you have both the financial means and the time, you can go on the trip, and you perceive this as freedom.

But let's think about it, is this truly freedom?

When desires arise, and you have no choice but to find ways to satisfy them, you feel uneasy and compelled. This sense of compulsion is definitely not freedom. Wise individuals understand that these desires are driven by karmic forces, pulling you towards certain actions; it is not your freedom to do those things. True freedom is when you have the option to choose to do or not to do something, and in either case, you feel at ease and content.

We don't want to get sick, we don't want to grow old, we don't want to get angry, we don't want to be separated from loved ones, we don't want to lose loved ones—there are many things in life that we don't want. Do we have the power to choose? Do we have freedom? Natural disasters like typhoons, earthquakes, and epidemics—do we have the power to choose or have freedom in such situations? Also, in our daily lives, when we're tired, we have to sleep; when we're hungry, we have to eat. Do we have the power to choose or have freedom in such circumstances?

Sentient beings are ignorant, and from their ignorance, they wander in mind. From mind wandering come mind running away, and from mind running away come actions. These actions give rise to karmic forces, and through the repeated karmic forces, karmic habits are formed. These karmic habits lead to the lack of autonomy, making one feel compelled without freedom, leading to suffering in the process of existence.

The world changes, hills rise, and valleys sink; the sea turns to mulberry fields.
The once youthful face of a person now bears white hair.
Thoughts in the mind fluctuate suddenly between joy and sorrow, between anger and sadness.
Seasons revolve day and night, transitioning between cold and heat.
The heavenly order shifts between cloudy and clear, and the wind and clouds are unpredictable, while the sun and moon keep urging each other.
Human affairs experience ups and downs, and fortunes rise and fall in cycles, but nothing is set in stone.
The world's sentiments vary, yesterday we meet with welcomes, today we face complaints.
Everything happens beyond our control.
Sentient beings' thoughts continually shift and flow, carried by their karma like drifting in the current.
